YPF DESAFÍO RUTA 40 2018 set first gear before a great number of spectators who came to the Bivouac, vibrated with the action at the Prologue and cheered at the competitors at the Starting Ramp. Tomorrow, competitors will face Stage 1 joining San Miguel de Tucumán and Belén.

Engines started at Desafío Ruta 40 with the 6.35km long Prologue. Around El Cadillal area, 30 kilometers from San Miguel de Tucumán, Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) was the fastest in the Bikes category with a time of 5m48. Behind him, Argentinian rider Kevin Benavides (Monster Energy Honda Team) and Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) were only 0.1 away.

While in 4×2 quads, Nicolás Cavigliasso (Yamaha Raptor) won by clocking 6m01. Enzo Silva (Yamaha Raptor) was the runner up 0.12 behind and Jeremías Gonzalez Ferioli (Yamaha Raptor) completed the podium  0.17 behind. Meanwhile in 4×4 quads, the experienced rider Daniel Mazzuco (Can Am Renegade) was the fastest with 6m51. Nicolás Robledo (Can Am Renegade) was 0.1 and Martín Sarquiz (Can Am Renegade) 0.3 behind.

In the cars category, T1 Gas class, Sebastián Halpern (Toyota Hilux) got the best time with 5m5s. The driver from Paraguay Blas Zapag Benitez (Toyota Hilux) was the second, 0.28 away and the Czech Peter Jerie got the third place 0.40 behind. Among T1 Diesel, the fastest was the only female competitor in this rally, Andrea Lafarja Bittar (Toyota Hilux). The driver from 420 Competition team had a time of 6m45. Behind were: Hugo Goya (Pampa II) with 6m50 and Ramón Nuñez (Toyota Hilux) with 7m20. Meanwhile, among the T3, “Pato” Juan Manuel Silva (Can Am X3) was the winner with 6m22. The ATV drivers from Patagonia Racing Team, Pedro Usandizaga (Polaris RZR) and Nicolás Zingoni (Polaris RZR) were second and third respectively.

Stage 1 San Miguel de Tucumán – Belén

This Monday, the first stage of the rally will take place between San Miguel de Tucumán and Belén, in Catamarca province. The first bike will leave the Bivouac at 5:40am, and then, as from 8:30am, the first timed section will start at Amaicha del Valle.

The 286,51km of stage will pose a real challenge for competitors.  The stage will have a fast initial section which will take place along Santa María River to give way later to cross-country sectors which will be very demanding, both for the competitor and for the vehicles.   At the end of the stage, competitors will face Pié de Médano region with its unpredictable dunes with vegetation.
